Rose Mauchline

Rose was the first Deaf artist to join Artists First. Even though her first language was British Sign Language, Rose’s ability to communicate her needs and wishes to non-signers was well developed.

Rose joined the ‘Art Club’ (the forerunner of Artists First) when she started attending the Portway Resources & Activity Centre. She was a long-term resident at Hortham Hospital before moving into a community home, prior to the closure of the hospitals.

Rose’s skills as an artist were evident from her first days at the Art Club, as was her passion for painting.

Rose was the first artist within the group to have a ‘Joint exhibition’, shown at what was then ‘Colston Hall Gallery’ . She received great reviews.

Although Rose passed away many years ago, we are lucky enough to have some wonderful examples of Rose’s work. One artwork of hers will be held in the National Disability Art Collection and Archive, such is the quality and importance of this woman’s work.
