David Scott
I first met David when I was a student nurse. As part of our student training, we were seconded to various ‘wards’ across two hospitals. Hortham hospital in Almondsbury and Brentry hospital in Brentry. At that time, David was living on Shakespeare ward at Brentry hospital - a ‘Challenging Behaviour’ ward for men only.
Hortham and Brentry Hospitals were a place of regular and at times - extreme violence. However, David in the studio was a very different man from the one I encountered on Shakespeare ward.

Although his output was low and he found it difficult to finish work, his use of lines and colour was simply wonderful. David produced a particularly stunning self-portrait for the ‘Strength-to-Strength’ exhibition at Spike Island.
Although David didn’t enjoy exhibition visits or workshops, he loved Spike Open Studios and would proudly declare “I painted that” to anyone who looked at his work.
A constant worrier who found it difficult to cope with change, David had a great sense of humour, often making fun of himself and his constant questions about the future. Sadly David died at a young age.
